William III Sixpence ‘Love Token’. Men would prove their love for a lady by bending a coin in front on her and give it to her. If she kept it she liked him, if she did not she would throw it away in front of him. The old Nursery Rhyme about the man finding a “crooked sixpence” was maybe based on finding a discarded bender love token. This practice seems to have started in the Elizabethan period and died out during the reign of William III.
